This past month, we had the great opportunity to pick Nina’s brain about their photography and working in the Bluegrass.
How did you get started in photography?
I was a journalism major in college, with a focus on photojournalism. I had loved photography my entire life, but after college, I didn’t feel I could compete with the rising number of photographers getting into the game. It wasn’t until about 6 years later, when a friend asked me to shoot his wedding, and I refused (I didn’t want the huge responsibility of capturing one of the most important days in a couple’s lives), that the unexpected happened. My husband (the other half of Nina & Wes Photography) really pushed me to pursue what I love to do. And after saying no about 10 times, I finally agreed to shoot my friend’s wedding, and when the photos actually turned out pretty well, I decided to give it a go. Ten years later, we are a husband and wife team, and we absolutely love what we do.
What is it like working as a husband/wife team?
At almost every wedding, when people find out that we are married, at least one person says, “Oh I could never work with my spouse.” I always laugh, because I wouldn’t want to work without him! Wes and I met each other at a
What do you love, living & working in the Bluegrass?
It’s Kentucky! What is there not to love?! I grew up in Upstate New York and didn’t come to Kentucky until I started college. The Bluegrass was never a part of my childhood imaginings. But from the moment I set foot on this beautiful Bluegrass soil, something just felt right. I love the kindness and hospitality of the people. I love that wherever you drive, beautiful green rolling hills greet you, and the site of horses running free on those hills never gets old. I love the passion people have for their Kentucky Wildcats. I love that once I married Wes, I couldn’t help but be swept away by the Wildcat fever. This is home, and it always will be, no matter where the wind blows us.
What are a few of your goals for 2016?
To make a positive impact on the lives of others. We host a non-profit workshop in Nepal called the Beyond Workshop. Photographers from all over the world join us in this tiny country (and next year Uganda, as well!) to learn how to better their photography and business skills, so in turn they can grow their businesses, with the goal of using that growth to make a difference in the world…to use their success to better the lives of others. They spend time not only in classroom sessions and beautiful shoots, but also doing volunteer work, serving the people of Nepal. We want to be brave enough to give until it hurts, and then to give some more after that. We want to see others do the same. Hopefully we will begin to see more and more photographers using their businesses to help a world in need.
